What does it mean to you to be a Canadian Citizen
People often discuss their rights as citizens. Very few people discuss their
responsibility as a Canadian Citizen. Is our relationship among each just the exchange of taxes for services facilitated by the government or is the something more. Do we have a responsibility to ensure the quality of our country? Is there something wrong with Canadian citizenship? Could declining voter turnout be the cause, no the result, of questionable politicians and disappointing policy? This is an issue not just in Canada but all the western world. There people around the globe who wish they could have the democratic rights that we have. Do you think we have lived up to our responsibility as citizens.

The short answer to your question is no. We have created a country wherein the rights of an individual are more important than their responsibilty. I used to be proud to be a Canadian (30 years ago) now I am ashamed and embarrased. We have not had the intestinal fortitude to say this is Canadian and this is what we stand for.
ReplyDeleteToo many "new" Canadians have come to this country because it was "better" and then try to change it. Now it's not "better" just "different" and different is not necessarily an improvement and in fact in my opinion has led to the demise of what should have been the best.
I am not sure if it is as much "New" Canadians, but young Canadians. It is the failure of new generations of Canadians. If someone wears certain clothes or speaks in a certain way does not affect me as long as they participate in democracy.
